Company Overview

EnergyNet is a SaaS platform for utility providers to optimize energy distribution, monitor grids in real-time, and improve customer engagement with actionable insights.

Challenges

EnergyNet struggled with high operational costs due to frequent outages, and inefficient energy distribution system, resulting in customer dissatisfaction and regulatory penalties. Their dashboard failed to incorporate and visualise the data and keep a record. Utility providers lacked real-time visibility into grid performance, making it difficult to identify and resolve issues quickly. The absence of predictive maintenance tools led to unexpected equipment failures and costly non-operational periods. Additionally, unstructured and cluttered data made decision-making complex, while manual cross-referencing of reports slowed down operations. These challenges highlighted the need for a more intuitive, data-driven platform to enhance grid management, optimize energy flow, and improve overall efficiency.

User Research

After conducting initial user research and gathering feedback from users across different roles, we identified some key UX issues and challenges.

Analysing data - What users are doing?
We analyzed usage data and discovered that users struggled to interpret complex grid data and predict equipment failures.
Talking to users - Understanding the “WHY”
Interviews with utility managers revealed a lack of actionable insights and overwhelming amounts of unstructured data.
Pain points Uncovered
  • Real-time data visualization was overly complex and hard to interpret.
  • No predictive tools to prevent equipment failures.
  • Manual cross-referencing of data

Ideate - Prototype - Test

Our prototypes included real-time data maps, predictive alerts for equipment failures, and simplified customer dashboards. Testing with utility managers ensured the designs addressed pain points effectively.

Solution

Through meticulous user research and iterative prototyping, we crafted a streamlined claims platform that simplifies complex workflows. By prioritizing usability and optimizing the information architecture, we enhanced accessibility, making the claims process faster and more intuitive for all users.

Interactive Grid Monitoring Dashboard
  • Built a real-time grid monitoring dashboard featuring an interactive map with nodes, fault indicators, and live metrics such as energy usage and outages. Tooltips provide detailed descriptions for critical and warning alerts.
  • Improvements: Enhanced grid visibility, faster issue identification, and streamlined response times.
Predictive Maintenance System
  • Developed a predictive maintenance screen with equipment health indicators (green, yellow, red) and actionable insights like prioritized tasks and service logs. Maintenance history is displayed in a user-friendly table format.
  • Improvements: Reduced equipment failures, improved operational reliability, and minimized maintenance costs.
Customer Engagement Screen
  • Designed a customer dashboard with usage breakdown charts, personalized energy-saving tips, and a detailed billing summary. Visual elements like pie charts and tables improve data comprehension.
  • Improvements: Increased customer satisfaction, better energy consumption awareness, and reduced support queries.
Comprehensive Analytics Screen
  • Created an analytics dashboard displaying consumption trends, monthly revenue metrics, and downtime analysis. Interactive graphs and tables enable utility managers to derive actionable insights.
  • Improvements: Improved decision-making, enhanced operational planning, and increased revenue transparency.

The Impact

After implementing the UX improvements, we tracked several key metrics to measure the impact of our work:

35%

Reduction in grid outages through predictive maintenance.

40%

Improved customer satisfaction with actionable insights.

20%

Cost savings achieved through optimized operations.

25%

25% Faster issue resolution via real-time grid monitoring.
